TMA and Caldwell Zoo Present the Art of the Elephant

Free Family Day at the TMA to feature Babar

May 5, 2010 (TYLER, TX) – Bring your family to the Tyler Museum of Art this Saturday, May 8 for a free Family Day event featuring the TMA’s upcoming exhibition, Babar’s Museum of Art. Representatives of the Caldwell Zoo will join TMA staff in presenting a program that connects the world of wildlife to the world of fine art during the event, which lasts from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will enjoy free art activities designed by members of the TMA education staff and a special art activity from the Caldwell Zoo.

“We are very excited to bring Babar’s Museum of Art to Tyler, and the education staff has worked very hard to develop imaginative and enriching programming the relates to the exhibition for children and families,” said Ken Tomio, TMA Head of Education. “With the help of one of our community partners, the Caldwell Zoo, we are able to present programming that goes beyond the scope of art education to include facts about elephants and wildlife, especially the star of our upcoming show, the elephant.”

This Saturday’s event will include free art activities and refreshments, and kids will be able to view special animal artifacts provided by the Caldwell Zoo. Space for Family Day is limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up early by calling (903) 595-1001.

The second Saturday Family Day is one of many educational programs offered by the Tyler Museum of Art, including Seniors’ Days and First Friday Art Tours. “Since our beginnings, it has been a goal of the Tyler Museum of Art to offer enriching programs to the community at no cost, so that everyone has the chance to walk in and experience the world of the visual arts,” said Mr. Tomio. “We believe that our monthly Family Days carry on this tradition of community service set by our founding partners.” Babar’s Museum of Art is organized by Mary Ryan Gallery, NYC. The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays.) Lunch is available in the Museum Café from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the TMA Gift Shop is open during Museum hours. For more information, call (903) 595-1001 or visit
