Create Art in the Wild:

TMA and Texas Parks & Wildlife Take Art Outdoors

5.5.10

TYLER, TX (May 10, 2010) –Tyler Museum of Art and Texas Parks & Wildlife will offer the third “Project: Art in the Wild” session, a special educational experience that connects art and nature, on Saturday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. “Art in the Wild” is held at the future home of the TMA, a 14-acre site, located at University Drive and Lazy Creek and across from the University of Texas at Tyler campus, a beautiful natural location that embodies a meadow, mature woodland forest, and an undisturbed creek bed. Registration is $10 for one child and $5 for each additional child, per family. Space is limited, so participants should call the TMA at 903.595.1001. In the event of rain, participants are asked to meet at the TMA.

Designed for ages 8 to 12 years old, these unique workshops offer participants a guided nature hike through the property by a Texas Parks &Wildlife educator. This is an interactive educational opportunity where youth learn about native plants, trees, and wildlife. Following the hike, children participate in a TMA art project that encourages contemplation on what was seen and learned. This month’s focus will be on native leaf and flower identification. Children will also learn the proper way to collect leaves and flowers in nature, and design and create their own leaf presses that they will use to press their collected material. Saturday’s event will be the final “Project: Art in the Wild” offered at the TMA future site this year. A final session will be held at the TMA, adjacent to TJC, in June.

The site is located on University Drive (Spur 248), between Stepping Stone School and RE/MAX Properties, across from the University of Texas at Tyler campus. Participants may park on the site, and the entrance drive will be clearly marked on Project days. Sanitation services are provided by AAA Sanitation.

The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays.) Lunch is available in the Museum Café from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the TMA Gift Shop is open during museum hours.
