TMA and Caldwell Zoo Present the Art of the Elephant

Free Family Day at the TMA to feature Babar

June 10, 2010 (TYLER, TX) – Bring your family to the Tyler Museum of Art this Saturday, June 12 for a free Family Day event featuring Babar’s Museum of Art. Representatives of the Caldwell Zoo will join TMA staff in presenting a program that connects the world of wildlife to the world of fine art during the event which lasts from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will enjoy free art activities designed by members of the TMA education staff and a special art activity from the Caldwell Zoo. During Family Day hours, adults may view the exhibition for a reduced admission of $5. Children 12 and under are free; students and seniors are $5. This Family Day event is sponsored by Debra and Thomas Bochow, M.D.

“We are very excited to bring Babar’s Museum of Art to Tyler, and the education staff has worked very hard to develop imaginative and enriching programming for children and families,” said Ken Tomio, TMA Head of Education. “With the help of one of our community partners, the Caldwell Zoo, we are able to present programming that goes beyond the scope of art education to include facts about elephants and wildlife, especially the central character of our summer exhibition, the elephant.”

This Saturday’s event will include free art activities and refreshments, and kids will be able to view special animal artifacts provided by the Caldwell Zoo. Visitors who have a copy of the Babar Passport may collect stickers from both the TMA and Caldwell Zoo. Passports are available at the TMA guest services counter, and were sponsored by Travel Leaders-Tyler. Space for Family Day is limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up early by calling (903) 595-1001. Visitors to the TMA may also view Cherokee Beadwork: Finding a Lost Art and The American Indian through the Eyes of Edward S. Curtis, which are both presented in the Museum’s Bell Gallery.
