Head Out West During TMA Family Day!

Free on Saturday

(TYLER, TX) October 6, 2010 – Families are invited to participate in the Tyler Museum of Art’s monthly Family Day this Saturday, October 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the TMA classroom. This month’s event will feature the exhibition L.O. Griffith: Painting the Texas Landscape, an exhibition featuring landscape paintings by early Texas artist L.O. (Louis Oscar) Griffith. Participants will be guided through free art activities designed to reflect and develop themes and techniques presented in the exhibition. The event is free and open to the public, and during Family Day hours, admission to L.O. Griffith: Painting the Texas Landscape is discounted to $5 for adults, and $3 for students and seniors. Children ages 12 and under enter the exhibition at no charge.

“Family Days provide the opportunity for children to come into the Museum and have a hands-on, interactive, fine arts experience,” said TMA Head of Education, Ken Tomio. “Members of our education department and docent program are available to lead children through art activities that not only increase a child’s understanding of art, but also help develop his or her individual creativity.” Family Days are offered on the second Saturday of every month at the Museum.

During this month’s event, children will create their own maps, similar to what the artist L.O. Griffith’s teacher and mentor Frank Reaugh created in order to document his sketching trips through West Texas. Children may also create their own landscapes using oil pastels on sandpaper. Other art activities will be available to participants, as well as light refreshments. This month’s Family Day event is sponsored by the JP and Mary Jon Bryan Foundation.

Visitors may also view the exhibition Form & Substance: The Art of George Tobolowsky, an exhibition of large-scale sculpture composed of salvaged metal on view in the Museum’s Bell Gallery.

The Tyler Museum of Art is supported by its members, Tyler Junior College, and the City of Tyler. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the TMA is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
