10 Years of Song and Celebration

Black History Month at the Tyler Museum of Art

(TYLER, TX) February 22, 2011 – Stop by the Tyler Museum of Art this Sunday, February 27, and enjoy the 10th anniversary performance by the Greater St. Mary’s Baptist Church Choir as part of the Museum’s celebration of Black History Month. The celebration lasts from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and will include free art activities for children in the classroom, free admission to the exhibition, and light refreshments in the lobby. The choir will perform at 3:00 p.m. and its program includes a selection hymns and spirituals. The event is free and open to the public.

“We have been fortunate to host the St. Mary’s choir here at the Museum for ten years,” said TMA Head of Education, Ken Tomio. “We look forward each year to a vibrant, uplifting experience that reminds us of our heritage, celebrates the accomplishments of our contemporaries, and focuses our vision on future progress and partnerships.” Younger Museum visitors may gather in the classroom where they can create their own works of art with guidance from members of the TMA education staff. During Sunday’s event, the children will learn how to create collages in the style of African American artist Romare Bearden, and also build beaded Sotho dolls, cone shaped dolls which are carried by Sotho women of southern Africa on their wedding days.

Visitors of the Black History Month Celebration are invited to view the current exhibition The Cornish Art Colony: Giants of America’s Gilded Age at no charge. “This is a great opportunity for the community to gather together at the Museum and to celebrate the rich cultural and artistic histories that will be showcased on Sunday,” said Mr. Tomio.
