Cartoons and Comic Strips!

Beat the Heat at TMA’s Family Day

(TYLER, TX) August 10, 2011 – Children will learn to create their very own cartoon characters and comic strips during this Saturday’s Family Day at the Tyler Museum of Art. The event lasts from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the TMA classroom. Escape the heat and watch as your children discover their inner artists while enjoying three free art activities designed by members of the Museum’s education staff. Light refreshments will be served, and admission to all current exhibitions is free.

“In addition to Family Day, this is also the last weekend that Remember When: Marvels and Memories from the Collection of Dr. James Clark will be open to the public,” said TMA Head of Education, Ken Tomio. “If you haven’t made it over to see this incredible private collection of vintage movie posters and memorabilia, stop by and enjoy what has been one of our most popular exhibitions.” Art activities will reflect objects and characters from Remember When. This Family Day event is sponsored by the Sam Roosth Foundation, and is free and open to the public.

Beloved characters from both cartoons and comic books are shown in their original roles inside the Museum’s North Gallery. Children will see favorites like Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, and then become inspired to develop their very own original cartoon characters. Comic book heroes like Batman, Superman, The Green Hornet, and Captain Marvel are superstars of the exhibition and are sure to inspire children to create their own superheroes in comic strip form. The exhibition features over 500 items including 1940s and 50s era movie posters representing popular film genres like Westerns, Horror Films and Science Fiction, as well as pop culture memorabilia and historical items from World Wars I and II.

The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays.)
