See, Hear, Experience & Create During Free Event
(TYLER, TX) February 8, 2012 – The Tyler Museum of Art is pulling out all the stops for a very special free Family Day this coming weekend on Saturday, February 11. Children will enjoy a wide variety of live performances, exciting arts activities, an incredible exhibition of maritime paintings and even free snacks during a special installment of the TMA’s second Saturday favorite. Family Day lasts from 2 to 4:00 p.m., and in addition to the usual art activities in the classroom, a variety of sea and water-themed performances will be offered in the North Gallery.
Saturday’s event is the last Family Day offered in conjunction with the exhibition Reflections on Water in American Painting–The Arthur J. Phelan Collection which includes over 50 paintings showing scenes of American life by the water. “The sea has captured the imaginations of artists, writers and musicians as long as mankind has been around, and this exhibition is proof that even modern man continues to be moved by scenes and stories of maritime adventure,” said TMA Head of Education Ken Tomio. “Felicity Enas, TMA Museum Educator, organized an exciting series of performances that are sure to enhance children’s experiences viewing the exhibition. Best of all, we are certain that children will have fun!”
Art activities will be available in the classroom throughout the two-hour event, and performances will begin in the gallery at 2:15 p.m. Special guest speaker Nick Sciarinni will astound and amaze children with stories of his personal experience working on World War II era Navy war ships. Among the scheduled readings will be an introduction to the American Girl Series character, “Kirsten,” who embarks upon an ocean going sailing ship in 1854. Other readings include excerpts from Beach Day by Patricia Lakin, The Seashore Book by Charlotte Zolotow, and River Parade by Alexandra Day.
Art activities will recall distant shorelines and impart hands-on experience using real fine art techniques. Children will learn to create their own sea patterns using mono-printing techniques and shaving cream, paint their own beach landscapes with salted paints, and also work with watercolor pencils and oil pastels.
Admission for the exhibition will be waived for participants of Family Day during the event hours (2:00 to 4:00 p.m.). Reflections on Water in American Painting is on view through March 4, and is presented by Exhibits Development Group, USA. Signature sponsor is Julietta Jarvis Foundation.
