The TMA is in continuous need of docents – trained gallery tour guides – due to the increased popularity of our exhibitions and programs. Our Docent Program serves thousands thousands of visitors of all ages each year. By leading guided gallery tours, docents provide inisights into the artwork on view and assist visitors in developing creative thinking skills. The program offers a unique opportunity for individuals to learn about and enjoy art in a friendly, stimulating environment.
Training consists of eight to 12 classes a year, along with lectures by guests speakers and our Curatorial and Education staff about upcoming exhibitions and our Permanent Collection. Tour opportunities include school tours, general interest tours, First Fridays, and tours in collaboration with school partnerships and TMA special events.
Docent Program applications are accepted throughout the year. Qualified candidates must be active Museum members, and are selected based on their prospective ability to communicate information about art knowledgably and enthusiastically. While a background in arts or humanities is helpful, the most important requirements are the desire to learn and a commitment to share your knowledge with the public. This program is an ideal volunteer opportunity for graduate students and retired educators.
